Panorama 50: Designing Privacy, Space and Life at Sea

After more than three years of construction, Julia Skop of Smart Yachts joined Nicolo Piredda of Piredda & Partners on board Panorama during one of the final stages.

The conversation took place on the day of the yacht’s last scheduled sea trials. Standing on board the completed yacht, they discussed the thinking behind the Panorama concept, the challenge of creating four full decks below 500 GT, the owner’s involvement in the exterior colour and the operational details guests will rarely notice.

A project built around the view

Julia Skop: It is nice to finally be on board after more than three years of construction. We started just fr om the scratch, and we had a lot of nice moments here. Why did you decide to call this project Panorama?

Nicolo Piredda: The name describes the project itself.

Panorama was designed to make the horizon, the landscape and the surrounding environment part of the yacht’s architecture. When you are inside, particularly in the lounges and the owner’s areas, you have a continuous view around you.
The sky and the landscape influence the atmosphere of the interior. They are not simply something you see through the windows. They become an element of the design.

That is why we took the panorama as the icon of the overall project.

Four decks below 500 GT

Julia: Many yachts have an attractive exterior and a sleek profile, while others are primarily designed around comfort inside. How did you achieve both on Panorama?

Nicolo: One of the main challenges was to introduce a genuine four-deck concept on a yacht below 500 GT.

To make that possible, everything had to be reconsidered. We could not simply take an existing layout and adjust it slightly. The internal arrangement, circulation and relationship between the decks all had to be developed specifically for this project.

From the beginning, guest life was the first priority. We looked at privacy, the way guests move around the yacht and how they would actually live on board.

The terraces and the amount of interior space show what we were trying to achieve. We are extremely happy with the result.

The yacht retains a balanced exterior profile despite the volume distributed across four decks. At the same time, the architecture provides the owner and guests with several clearly separated living areas rather than concentrating everyone on the same levels.

The owner’s metallic-grey exterior

Julia: As the project’s main designer, what do you think about the metallic-grey colour? It was the owner’s idea.

Nicolo: I have to say, it was a great suggestion from the owner.

The metallic grey gives the exterior a warmer appearance and probably makes a real difference to the overall look of the yacht. It changes depending on the light and the conditions around her.

Julia: She looks amazing on the water, a true beauty.

The choice demonstrates how an owner’s input can influence more than the practical arrangement of a yacht. In this case, the colour became an important part of Panorama’s identity and gave the finished yacht a character distinct from the more conventional white hulls and superstructures around her.

The details guests are not supposed to notice

Julia: Most people will only see Panorama from the outside. A few may be lucky enough to be invited on board. What are the hidden gems of this particular project?

Nicolo: The hidden gems are definitely the things you do not see.

The entire layout was rethought compared with the standard arrangements found on the market. To make the yacht better than what was already available, we had to study every movement of both guests and crew.

The objective was to make guest life easier, while ensuring that privacy was mandatory throughout the design.

One of the clearest examples can be found on the forward deck, wh ere the yacht has private guest terraces. These areas are reserved entirely for guests, although crew members still need to reach the surrounding operational spaces.

To solve this, the crew circulation runs separately fr om the lower-deck accommodation and service areas towards the garage and the movable deck systems. Crew members can carry out daily work without crossing the main guest routes.

Whatever operation happens on board, the guests do not even notice it.

This separation is not immediately visible when walking through the yacht. There are no dramatic architectural gestures announcing it. Instead, the success of the arrangement is measured by the absence of interruptions: fewer encounters with service activity, fewer shared passages and less operational movement through private spaces.

Final sea trials before delivery

The interview took place on the day of another important construction milestone: Panorama’s final sea trials before delivery.

Julia: I heard that the trials went very well. Do you have any comments?

Nicolo: It was definitely a good day. I also think it was the best possible day to carry out these sea trials.

There is already a rumour about a figure of approximately 45 decibels. What we can say for now is that the noise and vibration levels appear to be much lower than expected, and that is something to be proud of.

We should wait for the official measurements before giving the final numbers.

Although the official data was still pending at the time of the conversation, the initial impressions were positive. Noise and vibration performance are particularly relevant on a yacht built around open views, terraces and residential comfort. The quieter the machinery and systems remain, the less they interfere with the atmosphere the architecture was designed to create.

Why the owner chose Panorama

After more than three years working together, Piredda turned the conversation back to the beginning of the project.

Nicolo: It has been a long journey. It is already more than three years since we first met for this particular project, and it has been very, very nice.

But I am curious about the owner’s perspective. Why did the owner choose this boat instead of the other projects available on the market?

Julia: I would say it was an easy choice.

Other projects on the market were not providing the same level of comfort in the guest areas or a completely separate owner’s deck.

The owner takes great care of his friends and family. It was important for him to have proper guest cabins located on the main-deck level, while also preserving privacy.

With this project, we were able to achieve both: comfortable accommodation for family and guests and a separate deck dedicated to the owner.

That separation became one of Panorama’s defining characteristics. Rather than treating the owner’s area as simply the largest suite on board, the yacht gives it its own level and a clearer sense of independence.

At the same time, guests are not moved to a secondary part of the yacht. Their cabins remain on the main deck, with easier access to the primary social spaces and the views around them.

A yacht shaped from the inside out

The Panorama project was not developed around a single headline feature. Its central ideas are instead connected: four decks within a sub-500 GT platform, extensive views, a separate owner’s deck, main-deck guest accommodation and discreet crew circulation.

Together, these decisions reflect a yacht designed from the daily experience on board rather than from exterior appearance alone.

We are proud to share that the first hull of the semi-custom Admiral Panorama 50 — sold by Smart Yachts and built by Admiral, the renowned Italian Sea Group brand known for its steel-built pedigree — was delivered to her owner this July.
