The Langkawi archipelago is made up of 99 islands, only two of which are inhabited. The equally impressive island of Tioman is famous for its crystal clear waters and coral reefs, home to many exotic fish and animals. Penang Island is full of ancient landmarks, and Borneo, the land below the wind, is famous for its wide white beaches, warm sea, mountain parks, wildlife and impenetrable jungle.
World famous dive resorts are located on the southeast coast of the Celebes Sea: Mataking, Mabul, Sipadan and Kapalai. The Turtle Islands on the eastern shores are accessible to visit, and around Tioman underwater visibility reaches 35 metres, with turtles, exotic fish and whale sharks on the reefs. Ashore, a holiday in Borneo goes well with hiking in the mountains, a visit to the orangutan sanctuary, thermal springs and the Pearl Farm.
Langkawi's season is set by the northeast monsoon, so the fleet fills from November and the weeks between Christmas and Chinese New Year are the ones that go first. If those are your dates, book two to three months out, because the west coast fleet is small and part of it is shared with Phuket. November and March are the quieter ends of the same dry season. From May the rates fall sharply while the sailing stays workable, right up until the rain settles in around September.
