Yachting Market Trends in 2025: Explorer Yachts, Catamarans & Semi-Custom Shift
The yachting world is evolving — and rapidly. At this year's MYBA/IYBA Summit 2025, key findings of the Boat International report revealed strong trends that are reshaping how yachts are built, bought and utilized.
Let's start with the biggest trend: the rise of explorer yachts and catamarans. Only 58 explorer yachts were in production in 2020. Fast-forward five years to 2025, and that has nearly doubled to 105, with a total fleet of 786 worldwide. These hardy, long-range boats now measure an average of 37.2 meters in length and 493 gross tons. Their development — +35.5% over five years — will point to a general demand for adventure and cruising off the grid.
Multihulls, especially upscale catamarans, are also trendy. In 2020, only 22 were constructed over 24 meters in length, by 2025 the number is up to 66. The entire fleet of large catamarans has grown by a staggering 98.2%, averaging 30.2 meters in length. Their appeal? More space, shallowness, and increasing luxury. In short, versatility.

Another interesting change is in the manner in which yachts are being constructed. Full-custom yachts, though still the aspiration of some, are now becoming a rarity, particularly in the lower size segments. Today, Owners increasingly prefer to opt for semi-custom platforms, which provide some level of personalization at a fraction of the cost and reduced wait. In the 76m+ sector, the number of semi-custom projects grew by a staggering 115.4% during the last decade. This is a revealing change: cost-effectiveness and faster delivery are more important than uniqueness.

And what of sustainability? While hybrid and electric power has been the hype, only 14% of yachts over 24 meters being constructed today have alternative powerplants. It is an eye-opening statistic, especially in the wake of environmental consciousness in the sector. Clearly, there’s still a long way to go.

And finally, let's talk about sales. 369 yachts over 24 meters sold in 2024 (335 motor and 34 sailing yachts). The average was 37 meters, with an average asking price of €11.8 million. Just 11.4% of the sold ones were over 50 meters long. Compared to the 2021 bubble (over 750 yachts sold) the market is cooled to reach the levels of 2015. For buyers, that could mean it’s the right time to act.
